 Our research framework:

ESG factors are systematically integrated into our bottom-up research process for fixed income and equity issuers. We aim to develop our own holistic house view of issuers’ ESG profiles. By integrating ESG considerations with economic factors, and drawing from specialized ESG research sources, the research teams seek to identify financially material ESG factors and arrive at an independent, comprehensive view of the investment.

We seek to answer three key questions:

• What are the potential economic impact of the ESG issue and its associated effect on the issuer’s long-term growth potential, profitability or creditworthiness?
• Are ESG risks and opportunities accurately reflected in valuations?
• Is engagement beneficial to generate long-term economic value?

We view ESG analysis as a risk management tool and a potential alpha source. By integrating ESG factors into the traditional financial analysis framework, we aim to identify financially material factors which could affect the issuer’s long-term growth potential, profitability, or creditworthiness, and to assess if they are appropriately priced.

Our ESG integration process focuses on managing financial risks and identifying opportunities by including additional information in investment analysis to help inform our decision making. ESG integration does not seek to make ethical judgements and imposes no ESG-related restrictions on the investment universe. It seeks to systematically uncover ESG risks and opportunities to ensure they are appropriately priced in the investment being considered.

Back in the 1990s, Robeco was one of the first asset managers to see the potential of sustainability as a way of enhancing investment returns for our clients. With this principal aim in mind, we integrate environmental, social and governance ( ESG) information gained from leading sustainability research into our investment processes, and actively engage with the companies in our portfolios.

At Robeco we see sustainability as a long-term force for change in markets, countries and companies. This means it can have an important impact on future performance. So in our investment processes, we treat sustainability just like any other value driver, such as company financials or market momentum. We are convinced that this leads to better-informed investment decisions.

We have access to research from leading sustainability specialists, such as our sister company, RobecoSAM. We are particularly interested in materiality: which ESG elements impact companies’ financial performance and which don’t. This enables us to focus on the information that is most relevant to our investment performance. After all, our aim is first and foremost to achieve good investment returns for our clients. At Robeco, we regularly publish articles, white papers, engagement case studies and academic research on sustainability.

A dedicated team of engagement specialists maintains an active dialogue with some 200 companies a year on financially material themes that we identify in consultation with our investors. This has proven to be a successful means of influencing corporate behavior. They also vote at around 5,000 shareholder annual general meetings. All Robeco’s activities are in line with the Principles for Responsible Investing (PRI), which require asset managers to be active owners and incorporate ESG factors into their ownership policies and practices

Our purpose is to provide excellent investment performance to our clients through active management and responsible stewardship. The way we invest is changing, driven by a fundamental shift in how companies are being viewed and valued. We believe that considering risk, return and impact together can help us assess an asset’s real value and make better investment decisions for our clients. We have been considering ESG factors for over 20 years and since end of 2020*, fully integrate ESG across our managed assets. We have a team of over 50 dedicated sustainability professionals, were founding members of the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative and were among the first financial institutions to have their climate targets formally validated by the SBTi.

The way we assess impact in our investments is through our suite of award-winning tools which help our investment teams quantify the sustainability risks and impacts of assets we invest in and understand the ‘impact-adjusted profits’. They enrich our research process and enable our fund managers to ask questions about how a company is managing its business and the impact it has on society and stakeholders.

Our commitment to active ownership is integral to our investment principles and encompasses engagement and voting activities. It is about understanding how prepared companies are for a changing world, helping them to take necessary action and holding them to account. * For certain businesses acquired recently we have not yet integrated ESG factors into investment decision-making. There are also a small number of strategies for which ESG integration is not practicable or possible, for example passive index tracking or legacy businesses or investments in the process of or soon to be liquidated, and certain joint venture businesses are excluded.

As a wealth- and asset manager, Vontobel believes that the consideration of sustainability aspects in the field of investing is an essential part of a comprehensive sustainability strategy. The signing of the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) by Vontobel at the start of 2010 represents an important milestone in this context. By becoming a signatory to the Principles for Responsible Investment, Vontobel signalled its ambition to position itself as a global wealth and asset manager that offers sustainable solutions as a key part of its product range and whose approach to business is characterized by foresight and ownership.

As an active multi-boutique asset manager, each boutique tailors its investment and ESG approach depending on the strategy and the requirements of the asset classes in which it invests. We manage a variety of investment strategies, where ESG forms an integral part of the investment process applied by each investment boutique. Typically, in these strategies:

We have an integrated approach to responsible investment and ESG research that is embedded within our investment approach, and is supported by our culture of collaboration, sharing of research and ideas, and robust debate. In developing our understanding of a business we take into account its approach to managing environmental, social and governance issues, as well as any controversies that may have arisen.

In 2018 we launched a proprietary and innovative responsible investment (RI) ratings system that combines an assessment of a company’s financial stewardship with an analysis of how well it manages its material ESG risks (using the SASB framework). Combining both aspects into a single, forward-looking company rating from 1 ( strong) to 5 (weak), reflects our conviction that prudent management of financial and ESG factors is important to a company’s ability to create long-term, sustainable value. Utilising data science and cloud computing, the RI analytics and ratings add to our fundamental research, providing our global investment teams with a more robust and evidence based RI capability, with coverage across 5,500 global listed equities.

At Invesco, our commitment to sustainable investing is a key element of our ambition to be the most client-centric asset manager. For many of our clients, long-term value creation and effective risk mitigation are fundamental to achieving their investment goals. As a result, we offer a range of sustainable investment solutions that help our clients to express their values across active, passive, equity, fixed income, real estate, multi-factor, and other exposures.

At the direction of our clients, we are able to integrate material extra-financial factors, including ESG factors, that help us as we seek to deliver strong outcomes to clients. As investors in global equities, corporate and sovereign fixed income instruments, as well as real estate and multi-asset strategies, we recognize the differences between asset classes and geographies. We are able to apply ESG principles in a variety of ways and the degree is dependent on the asset class and strategy.

In general, our teams may consider ESG as one input to their investment process as part of a holistic consideration of the investment risk and opportunity. Our portfolio managers have absolute discretion on the view taken on any given ESG risk or opportunity and may consider the following core aspects:

• Materiality: The consideration of ESG issues on a risk-adjusted basis and in an economic context. We do not view ESG aspects as constraints, aside from certain restrictions driven by legal obligations in certain territories.
• Momentum: The concept of improving ESG characteristics over time is particularly interesting in our view. We find that companies whose ESG practices are improving may enjoy favourable financial performance in the longer term.

• Engagement: We take our responsibility as stewards of capital very seriously and see engagement as an opportunity to help achieve long-term value creation. Dialogue with portfolio companies is a core part of the investment process for our fundamental teams. We often participate in board-level dialogue and are instrumental in giving shareholder views on management, corporate strategy, transparency, and capital allocation, as well as wider ESG aspects.

And at the heart of our approach is a dedicated Global ESG Team, who act as a centre of excellence to guide and support our investment managers, as well as informing and directing our ESG focus.

We believe that an organization of specialized investment teams is the optimal structure to achieve consistent outperformance and risk-adjusted returns. Fixed income: ESG analysis helps improve our understanding of risk, and our analysts have long considered ESG issues as part of ex-ante fundamental credit research, especially governance issues and management quality. Allspring’s Global Fixed Income Research (GFIR) team is at the heart of the fixed-income platform. Teams using credit research draw upon this resource to provide insight and analysis for a wide range of global issuers. The GFIR’s rigorous, proprietary research incorporates a comprehensive analysis of quantitative and qualitative factors, including catalysts, drivers of change, ESG, and climate risk exposure and management of these risks through our in-house risk assessment framework, ESGiQ, and other processes.

Firstly and most importantly, we do not believe that there is a trade-off between ESG analysis and the delivery of strong investment performance. We integrate ESG analysis into our investment process because we expect it will lead to better results.

We consider ESG factors to be a critical part of the investment process and build the analysis of these into our research. As credit investors, we are focused on managing the downside risk of the Fund’s investments and we consider ESG factors in this context. Specifically, we assess environmental and social factors alongside other risks, which include operational, legal and political/regulatory risks. Governance is incorporated into a broader analysis of the shareholder structure and the management. While shareholders are often aligned with management, creditors are not necessarily so, and so it is vital that we consider governance alongside the particular incentives faced by management and the shareholders. These include the management’s compensation structure and any known aims of the shareholders.

One of the core foundations of our credit process is the search for sustainable cashflow with which to repay our investment. Factors that endanger the cashflow profile of a company, be they traditional or ESG factors, are equally important in assessing risks to an investment. As such, we do not seek to separate the assessment of more traditional economic factors and ESG; they are one and the same.

We do not outsource our ESG assessment to third-party scoring services. We believe that the analysis of ESG factors – as with the assessment of other non-financial risks – is inherently a qualitative judgement and not something that can be credibly simplified to an alpha-numerical score. Given that we treat ESG factors as an integral part of the credit research process, it is not something we feel can be successfully sub-contracted to a third party.
